The building is a four storey late Victorian property situated in a conservation area in Fulham, London and is located in a very desirable location. The building was subdivided into 5 one bedroom flats in the late 1970’s and were in a total state of disrepair. A R P Design Solutions was asked by the client to look at improving the market value of the property and to completely refurbish and modernise the flats to a luxuries standard. We were asked to look at opportunities where spaces could be opened up or extended to cope with the already tight footprint of the building and to ensure that each flat was thermally and energy efficient to meet current environmental standards. External treatments were also required with restoration of the front and rear façades. Any loss of units or proposed extension required careful considerations and a full planning application was required.
We approached the design by eliminating spaces which were not needed and giving back where it was needed. By using this approach we reduced the number of flats from five very small 1 bedroom layouts to three larger 2 bedroom arrangements with a 1 bedroom loft flat on the top floor. We extend at the rear ground floor by adding a side extension to provide a large open plan living space. In addition; by situating open plan rooms in a South facing direction we absorbed as much natural sunlight and daylight into these rooms by using roof windows and large patio doors to the rear. All 4 flats have been fully upgraded to meet modern living standards and are thermally and energy efficient. The interior finishes were selected carefully to reflect the light and give a sense of space with clean and crisp visual lines throughout.
