The property is situated in a conservation area in Fulham, London and resides in a a quiet residential road facing Eel Brook Common in Fulham, London. The property was purchased by the clients in a dilapidated state and required extensive refurbishment and modernisation. A R P Design Solutions were asked to look at obtaining planning permission to extend the rear ground floor to create an open plan family kitchen, extend and create a new two storey back addition and completely renovate the house from inside to outside. The clients wanted us to give them their first dream home and retain as much of the original internal period features of the house. We also wanted to ensure that the property will be thermally and energy efficient by incorporating insulation, new heating systems and acoustic separation between the floors.
We designed a rear single storey extension using glass rooflights and thin profile aluminium folding sliding doors. The key was to bring in as much natural daylight as possible and extend out without losing precious garden space. The new rear back addition was aligned with the neighbouring property and this gave us an opportunity to incorporate a rear roof terrace on the top of the extension. The interior room layouts were adjusted to suit a growing family’s needs with a new bathroom and utility room in the back addition and we worked closely with the clients to select the most appropriate interior finishes for each of the rooms. Original ceiling features were retained and we sourced traditional mouldings to match the period features of the original house. The end product was period meets contemporary in a subtle and elegant way throughout.
